[ti:It Is Not Nice to 'Dump on' Others] [al:Words and Their Stories] [ar:VOA] [dt:2023-04-09] [by:www.voase.cn] [00:08.07]And now, Words and Their Stories, from VOA Learning English. [00:20.18]Trash may not be a glamorous subject. [00:24.10]But it is an important one. [00:27.34]We can throw our trash in a container called a trash can. [00:33.54]We can dispose of our garbage in a garbage can. [00:38.12]We can dump our unwanted things in a dumpster. [00:44.12]All these unwanted things might end up at a landfill, sometimes called a dump. [00:52.53]We explored being down in the dumps in a recent Words and Their Stories. [00:58.70]Being at the bottom of a dump is probably not a nice place to be. [01:05.02]If you are down in the dumps, you feel sad. [01:10.08]Down in the dumps means you have the blues, or you feel out of sorts. You are the opposite of happy. [01:20.89]If your friend is down in the dumps, you could try to do something fun to lift their spirits. [01:28.49]You could take them to their favorite restaurant or a movie to cheer them up. [01:35.73]The verb "dump" means to place things without care. [01:40.34]For example, when I wash my clothes, I dump the dirty clothes on the floor in front of the washer. [01:49.24]But I don't dump the clean clothes on the floor. [01:53.05]They are clean! Dumping them on the floor could make them dirty again. [02:00.53]We can dump other things besides trash and dirty clothes. [02:05.84]If you dump on someone you say bad things about them. You show them little respect. [02:15.28]And at work, you do not want to receive a document dump. [02:21.32]This means someone has given you a huge number of documents. [02:27.39]Usually, you have to deal with them in some way. [02:31.67]Now, let's hear these "dump" expressions in a conversation between two co-workers. [02:39.41]A: Hey, let's go! TGIF! Time to have some fun! [02:45.30]B: [sounds sad] I can't. You guys go ahead without me. [02:49.78]A: Why? And why are you so down in the dumps? [02:54.02]B: Karen just dumped a huge stack of work on my desk. [02:59.35]A: She gave you a document dump at 5 o'clock on Friday? [03:04.39]B: She did. And she wants me to file it all before I leave. [03:09.71]A: Can't you tell her you'll do it on Monday morning? [03:13.63]B: I tried. She said no. [03:15.70]A: You know, she did that to me once and I dumped her document dump right in the dumpster. [03:23.45]B: Did you get in trouble? [03:26.23]A: No. She didn't even ask about those stupid papers. [03:31.53]I don't mean to dump on her, but dumping a bunch of needless work on someone on a Friday is a mean thing to do. [03:40.98]B: You know what...you're right! I'm coming with you guys. This document dump can wait until Monday. [03:50.56]And that's all the time we have for this Words and Their Stories. Until next time. [03:56.15]I'm Anna Matteo.
